MONTERREY and the Mexican Highlands

Monterrey (Mexico's third-largest city) has striking modern buildings and plenty of museums, galleries, markets, cathedrals and palaces. The city centre has a large and lovely pedestrian-only area with plazas (squares), gardens, public art, shops, cafes and restaurants - one of Mexico’s most pleasant cities for strolling. The mountains, including the distinctive Cerro de la Silla, make a distinctive backdrop.
We will stay a total of 9 nights at the beautiful secluded resort of Bahia Escondida, nestled between the Sierra Madre Mountains and a lovely lake, 19 miles south of Monterrey. The resort is spread over 12 acres and surrounded by lush vegetation and trees. A short drive away is an historic village, an arts and crafts market and the waterfalls of Cola de Caballo. The resort has a large swimming pool, indoor pool and jacuzzis. There is also a restaurant, bar, tennis and squash courts and a well-equipped gym with sauna and steam room. The marina is on a lake at the foot of the resort. Here boats are for hire and fishing can be arranged.
During our stay an activity programme has been arranged for us and includes guided walks, aqua aerobics, gentle fitness (stretching), Spanish lessons, Mexican cooking lessons, handicrafts, pool tournaments, table games, tennis lessons (equipment provided) and cocktail making. Evening entertainment will include a music trio, folkloric show, movies, card evenings, talks on Mexican history and the local region, quiz nights and talent shows.
Our spacious studio suites have modern and attractive furnishings and come equipped with a small kitchenette that includes a stovetop, toaster, coffee maker, microwave and fridge. Each room has two beds, climate control, telephone, balcony and television with HBO movies. The bathroom has a shower only.
Since the resort is set in the hills there are hills in and around the hotel with some steps. While it is a low-rise resort, there may be some steps leading to some of the rooms (no elevators). Due to the resort’s size and hilly terrain, small vans are available to move you from one area to another within the resort if required. Shuttles to the local market, village or supermarket can be arranged for a nominal charge per person.
This holiday also includes a 6-day tour through beautiful mountainous scenery to some of the most picturesque towns and villages nestled in the Sierra Madre Mountains. We will stay at the historic silver mining boomtown of Real de Catorce, the thriving and beautiful colonial city of Zacatecas, and Saltillo - famous for its colourful cloth manufacturing.
This unique holiday, which is off the regular tourist route, suits those who enjoy exploring or just relaxing in a beautiful setting.
